Niemi for President…

…well not really, but if Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville is still having trouble deciding who to start between the pipes come playoffs, he should definitely resort to this weekend’s game tapes one more time. That is, if there is still a question. It appears Cristobal Huet’s time as a Blackhawk may be
coming to an end, and his role as a bench warmer about to begin. Antti Niemi should/could/would be your starter.

Niemi is hot right now. This weekend he played in both contests, the first being against one of the top seeded teams in the East, the New Jersey Devils. While it was Kris Versteeg who saved the team from a loss with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation with a hard a shot from the point that went off a defenders skate right passed Martin Brodeur , Niemi had to not only keep the Devils from improving their 1-0 lead through out regulation, but when the game went to a shootout, he stopped all three attempts by the Devils giving the Hawks a 2-1 win after trailing for as long as they did.

Niemi would again get the start in yesterday’s match up with the Calgary Flames. A Flames loss meant a lot of Western Conference teams clinching their playoff spots, and Niemi and the Hawks did their job to make sure that happened, consciously or not. Final score after the buzzer was 4-1. Niemi faced 26 shots. He’s won his last 3 straight, and is now second in the league with a 2.16 GAA.

With the playoffs right around the corner and that possibility of playing the team that killed their championship hopes last year, the Detroit Red Wings,  in the first round still up in the air, it is time to make a decision. Forget the goalie who has playoff experience, his post season numbers are terrible anyways. Its time to put the one who’s getting it done for you right now, at the top of your list. And while Coach Quenneville is known to hold back his decision from the media until game time, it may already be made.

On behalf of the girls at ChicksWhoGiveAPuck.com we would like to congratulate the Chicago Blackhawks on winning the Central Division. This is the first time the Hawks have clinched their division in 17 years. Congratulations guys and good luck in the post season!
