Ponikarovsky suspended 2 games

Pittsburgh Penguin forward Alexei Ponikarovsky was suspended 2 games by the NHL for his hit on Islanders Josh Bailey during last night’s game. Ponikarovsky was assessed a five minute major and a game misconduct on the ice. After reviewing the play, the league determined the hit warrented a suspension. The hit was similar to the one Alexander Ovechkin took on Brian Campbell just a few weeks back. Just like Campbell, Bailey was injured on the play.

The Pens acquired Ponikarovsky from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula. He is rumored to still hope to sign a new contract with Toronto during the offseason despite the trade.  Since joining the Penguins he has produced goals and assists. He will miss the last two regular season games to serve said suspension.
