Crosby puts up 5 points against Isles, ties Stamkos for Rocket

The Pens took on the New York Islanders in their final regular season game before they head to the playoffs. The Islanders failed to make the post season for the third consecutive season and the Pens will take on the Ottawa Senators in a few days when the playoff rounds begin. However, that doesn’t mean this game didn’t mean anything to Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby.

After a 1-0 loss to Atlanta on Saturday, Crosby would have one last shot at the Rocket Richard Trophy as he trailed both Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos by 1 goal. Crosby was also 8 points behind points leader Henrik Sedin, and anything is possible right?

In the opening period, Crosby began with 2 assists on goals by Evgeni Malkin and Eric Godard and then netted his “real” 50th goal of the season. In the second period he recorded another assist and netted his 51st goal putting him one ahead of both Stamkos and Ovechkin. Stamkos was in the middle of his own game against the Florida Panthers, Ovechkin done for the day.

With less than 15 seconds left in Tampa’s game, it was thought that Sid would take the Rocket himself for the first time in his career, but Stamkos ended up scoring on an empty net tying Crosby for the lead. The two will share the trophy, Ovechkin left in the dust.
