No Suspension for Big Zdeno Chara

The Buffalo Sabres kept their playoff dreams alive with a 4-1 win over the series leading Boston Bruins last night. Lead by rookie goaltender Tuukka Rask, the Bruins had an edge on the Sabres leading the series 3-1 going into the contest but the Sabres fought elimination and lived to see a Game Six.

As the buzzer rang, in true hockey fashion, gloves were dropped and a all out brawl began aside the Bruins Bench. Caught in the middle of all this was 6’9 defensemen Zdeno Chara who was handed not only a roughing minor, but a instigator penalty and a game misconduct. Any instigation that occurs within five minutes of the end of regulation typically warrants an automatic one game suspension per league rules.

However, the league can choose to lift the suspension as they did with Chara. According to reports by ESPN.com, Sabres forward Paul Gaustad slashed Chara initially which is likely what caused Chara’s actions. Also during the incident, Miro Satan got into an altercation with Vezina candidate Ryan Miller. Satan and Sabres forward Cody McCormick were assessed game misconducts as well as roughing minors and Miller was handed a penalty for leaving his crease. Gaustad received a penalty for slashing.

Please note, the uplifting of the suspension has yet to be reported by NHL.com at this time.Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff is expected to address the media this afternoon. Both teams will head back to Boston for Game 6 Monday at 7p.m. ET on CBC.
