Flyers Trade Ryan Parent for the Rights to Sign Dan Hamhuis

In the past few days or so there has been a lot of talk about possible trades the Flyers would be making that involved Jeff Carter. Between Carter possibly being shipped out and the Flyers looking for a number one goaltender, there wasn’t much talk of defensemen other than Braydon Coburn. But that quickly changed on this Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers traded defenseman Ryan Parent to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick

Ryan Parent was probably the least popular Flyer last season. He wasn’t always in the lineup thankfully, but when he was, you couldn’t help but worry when he was out on the ice. He just didn’t look like he ever knew what he was doing. He was always a step behind. The Flyers had their big 4, but after that it was a disaster. Ryan Parent was a big part of that disaster. He was oft out of position and turned the puck over a lot. It was an adventure with Parent on the ice.

Dan Hamhuis on the other hand is a solid defenseman that Flyers fans have been asking for since last season. The Flyers tried to go after him, but they never nailed a deal until today. The Flyers do have to sign him by July 1st, but I don’t think Paul Holmgren would have made the move if he didn’t think he could get  Hamhuis signed.

Parent was originally acquired from Nashville as part of the Peter Forsberg deal. So he is heading back to the Predators again. The Flyers seem to like to make deals with Nashville. There was the Forsberg deal for Parent and Scottie Upshall. The trades for Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell. Now it’s the Hamhuis for Parent deal.

This trade only brings about more questions for the Flyers. Are they going to sign Coburn? Is Jeff Carter now the odd man out? Will the Flyers make a deal for a goaltender soon?

Those questions should all be answered soon. But if the Flyers do sign Coburn, having Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, and Dan Hamhuis in one defensive core could easily give the Flyers the best defense in the league. It’s an exciting thought, but we will have to see who the Flyers sign first.

But regardless of what else comes about for the Flyers, this was an excellent trade by Paul Holmgren. After seeing Ryan Parent play for quite some time, it’s impossible to even try to compare him to Hamhuis. I’d say the Flyers were certainly winners in this trade. But Nashville looks like they are trying to rebuild and change A LOT so maybe this trade helps them too. We are sure to find out come next season.
