Busy day in Blueland: new coaches, new players for the Thrashers

Last night, or early this morning, the Atlanta Thrashers confirmedyesterday’s reports of a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Blackhawks involving key components Marty Reasoner and Dustin Byfuglien (the official press release can be read here).

As if this wasn’t enough to get Thrashers fans worked up, TSN is now reporting that Boston Bruins assitant Craig Ramsay has been hired as Atlanta’s head coach. Likewise, Chicago Blackhawks assistant John Torchetti has been named associate coach. Both are familiar faces to Thrashers GM Rick Dudley.

Craig Ramsay has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach to the Boston Bruins. He was interim head coach of the Buffalo Sabres for 21 games in 1986-87 and head coach — again interim, for 28 games — of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2000-2001. He worked under Rick Dudley at Tampa Bay, when Dudley was GM and Ramsay an assistant coach. In his 49-game experience as a head coach, Ramsay is 16-27-6, a record that may make some nervous about Dudley’s judgement call.

John Torchetti comes to Atlanta after two seasons as an assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks. He has done stints as head coach for the Florida Panthers in 2004 (where he replaced Rick Dudley) and the Los Angeles Kings in 2006. He was head coach of the QMJHL’s Montcon Wildcats in 2006-07 before taking the assistant position at Chicago.
