The Pittsburgh Penguins have made their second move on this first day of free agency and have signed Devils defenseman Paul Martin to a five year, 25MM contract which should just about round out their search on the defensive end.

The Minnesota native, who was a strong part of the Devil’s power play unit, missed 59 games this past season due to injury and in the 22 games he appeared in produced only two goals and 11 points. In the five seasons prior to that with the Devils, he averaged around 30 points per season.

The signing of Martin has pretty much erased any hopes Pens fans may have had of signing Dan Hamhuis, who the Pens acquired the rights to during this year’s draft but were not able to come to an agreement with prior to the start of free agency. The jury is still out on defensemen Mark Eaton and Jordan Leopold, but with Martin and newly acquired Zbynek Michalek it is not necessarily looking promising.
