St. Louis Extends Contract

When Steve Yzerman took over in Tampa Bay fans of the NHL knew there would be changes. At the Draft Yzerman took some smart picks that told the rest of the league that he meant business. Before Free Agency he let Alex Tanguay walk and at the start of the Free Agency he extended the contract to Martin St. Louis. He’s certainly not a young player but when paired with Rocket Richard co-winner Steven Stamkos, St. Louis has been making it happen with over 80 points a season for more than a few season and playing almost every game there was no reason not to sign him.

St. Louis’ deal will be for four years at $5.625 million per year. The strength of this deal is in St. Louis’ playmaking ability, though he can light the lamp on his own if need be. Having him out on the ice with Stamkos provides the Lightning with many different options. If Stamkos gets double the coverage their linemate or D can step in if St. Louis doesn’t take the shot himself. Yzerman is ensuring that Stamkos has the linemates he needs to fully develop him into a top player. With imperfect coaching and development in the past things only look up for the Lightning’s top scorer.
