Good News for Rangers fans

Expected to be announced tomorrow, Ryan McDonagh is leaving the University of Wisconsin and heading to the Big Apple.

A source close to the Chicks and to McDonagh himself confirmed that McDonagh will not be returning to Madison for his senior year. He was originally drafted 12th overall in 2007 the year he was also named Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey – a title given to the most distinguished high school hockey player in MN. He helped lead Cretin-Durham to their first ever state title in 2006. Right before the last Free Agency frenzy on June 30, 2009 his rights were traded from the Montreal Canadiens along with Christopher Higgins, Pavel Valentenko, and Doug Janik to the New York Rangers in exchange for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, and Michael Busto.

This year the Badgers made it to the NCAA Championships only to be shut out by Boston College 5 – 0. Fellow teammate Blake Geoffrion was awarded the Hobey Baker for most excellent college hockey player. He is now with the Nashville Predators. McDonagh was the only tri-captain remaining after Geoffrion and Ben Street (both Seniors) left. He finished this past season with 18 points and a plus-minus at plus-23.

When the Badgers made it to the Championships it was speculated that if they won a slew of their players might not come back. McDonagh may not believe another Championship run is possible, thus headed onto the next stage of his life.

His contract is said to be for $875,000 plus signing bonus. No word yet on if it’s a two way contract or not. Player development camps started last week and McDonagh loved it.
