St. Louis Blues Sign Jaroslav Halak to a 4 Year Contract

The St. Louis Blues announced today that their recent RFA acquisition from the Montreal Canadiens, Jaroslav Halak, was signed to a four year, $15 million contract extension. A concern with Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier was that Halak’s cost after his outstanding playoff run would be prohibitive to a new contract.  Apparently the estimated cost was higher than the actual cost in this downturned market.

Halak’s contract extension is the most expensive for a goaltender on this market, yes, but at $3.75 million a season, it’s reasonable.  Also, some might argue that the Blues have not had a starting goaltender of consistent value since Curtis Joseph, so this move gives the Blues some stability in net to build around.
