Niedermayer: Experience Up Front

In something of a surprise signing, Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today that former Devil, Rob Niedermayer

would be suiting up in Buffalo next season. While he won’t be helping the first or second line score the goals they’ve been lacking, Niedermayer is a gritty center and at 35 with 16 NHL seasons behind him, he can certainly provide leadership and experience to the young 3rd or 4th liners he’ll be playing with.

That experience includes plenty of postseason experience that was glaringly missing in the 09-10 playoffs. Niedermayer was in the Stanley Cup Finals with Florida in 1996, and again in 2003 with Anaheim. Finally, in 2007 as an alternate captain, Rob and his brother, captain Scott Niedermayer, led the Ducks to a Stanley Cup. In the ’09-10 season, Niedermayer proved he wasn’t ready to slow down just yet, with 22 points (10+12), his most since ’05-’06.

Niedermayer’s contract is a 1-year deal and marks Buffalo’s second veteran UFA signing, Jordan Leopold joining the team on Day 1.
